With a movement of shapes, texture and color, I have found a way to capture the women I paint in a bolder way than my earlier paintings. The discovery of mixed media in my Sundance collection continued in a group of works that were created during a time of major changes. Moving from California to Arizona, and becoming a single woman again, provided deeper thoughts of how beauty is interpreted in women. Sometimes solemn, the faces she painted reflected a pressing search for truth and understanding. They ask the questions, “Do you love me?”, “Do you understand me?’, and even a sorrowful “Are you aware that exist?” These eyes are open for interpretation.

My second series was an exploration of texture. Using various colors of tissue paper, I would tear, layer, and glue random sizes and shapes in an unplanned fashion. On top of that, I would add acrylics and lastly my subject. Each base layer was an unexpected surprise, as I would play with various brush strokes and flow of colors. This series has been digitally enhanced for clarity from the original photographs.

Drawing was my first love. Throughout my life, I was drawing every moment I could, mostly using pencil or technical pens. These early works were primarily used for her graphic design work in logos, brochures, packaging design and more. When I moved into the fine art world, I missed the drawing aspect of her craft, as I was mostly painting with acrylics. On a rainy day in 2016, I grabbed a pack of colored pencils and started drawing. It was a delightful and fulfilling experience to trade off from the paint brushes. I now uses Prisma oil based pencils and sometimes implements pen work in these pieces.
